A ‘bevvy’ of sisters

The Glad cafe in Shawlands continues to delight with its latest tranche of upcoming gigs.

In particular, the arts cafebar has managed to book the outstanding musical trio The Bevvy Sisters, who will be showcasing songs from their latest album, Plan B — out now at all good music retailers, as they say.

Originally formed as an offshoot of all-star swing combo the Loveboat Big Band, the Bevvys simultaneously channel the heritage of such classic sister-acts as the Beverleys, the Andrews and the Boswells, while their own diverse backgrounds and collective songwriting skills reinvent the female trio formula.

Debut album St James Sessions launched with a sold-out show at Glasgow’s world-famous Celtic Connections festival in 2010, winning glowing reviews and UK-wide airplay, while their captivating live shows continue to ingage their growing fan base.

Besides headline appearances including Edinburgh Festival Fringe, Belgium’s Schots Weekend, the Big Tent Festival and Orkney Folk Festival, they’ve collaborated with English folk star Eliza Carthy, Scottish super-trio Lau, and iconic fiddler and singer Dave Swarbrick, Canadian reggae artist Jason Wilson and Scotland’s legendary Dick Gaughan.

Far from simply vocalising their album hit list — in which case, save your money and stick the cd on — the trio’s live shows are a must-see as the three singers are maestras of audience engagement. They seemingly effortlessly embue an “all pals together” atmosphere helped along by a wickedly sharp wit. But, of course, it’s the intensely beautiful vocals that just carry audiences away.

Tomorrow, Friday, from 7.30pm. £10. No kids.
