To kick off the Southside Fiesta on May 11 a procession will take over Shawlands with groups, schools, businesses and acts all being invited to take part and demonstrate their diversity by creating a riot of colour on the Southside streets.

All are welcome to get involved and if you’d like to be a part of the celebrations from lining the streets to walking in the procession, you can let the team know.

The procession will arrive in the newly finished square outside Langside Halls, kicking off an afternoon of quality live entertainment from local schools and content drawn from the 2019 Southside Fringe Festival programme.

Alan Reid, writer of the well-known and well-loved Glasgow song ‘The Dear Green Place’, will be working with the school pupils and performing the song with them on the day.

Following content from the schools, Rapido Mariachi will get everyone well and truly in the Fiesta mood.

With Tom McGuire and the Brassholes headlining, they’ll share the stage with wonderful acts from the festival programme like Tom Harlow and the Skinflints.

Enjoy walk about fun from the Creative Martyrs and the Fringe Enforcers and there will be plenty for all the family to do with crafts from Print Clan and kids performers such as Jaggy Nettles.

All will be complemented by stalls populated by Shawlands businesses.

Corinna Currie, festival director said: “It’s incredibly exciting to be celebrating the opening of the 2019 festival by showcasing the new square at the heart of the Southside, we’re hoping it will get folks imaginations going on how this fantastic civic space can be used by the community here to showcase the area and wealth of talent within.

“The Southside is well worth a visit these days”.

Pupils from Shawlands, St Albert’s and Langside Primary Schools have been working hard to design vibrant and colourful pieces of art which will showcase their creative talents during the procession.

Their artwork will encompass aspects of their diversity but also what unites them in calling the Southside their home.

As well as this, the pupils have been working with Baldy Bane Theatre Company to produce a musical piece to be performed at the square at Langside Halls, with Alan Reid.
