But guitarist Adrian McKenna from Newton Mearns disagrees. He says the music of bespectacled Holly and The Crickets lives on.

Adrian will be strapping on that Stratocaster next Thursday when the Buddy Holly show plays Glasgow's royal concert hall.

The former Eastwood High pupil who even delivered The Extra in his formative years, moved away from the southside 20 years ago to follow his dream to be a rock musician.

And he hasn't looked back. Adrian has been playing professionally ever since and toured with acts as diverse as Steve Harley and Atomic Kitten.

He told Live: "Peggy Sue was the first song I learned to play when I was just nine years old.

"So coming back to Glasgow playing Buddy's music will be a real full-circle moment for me".

Headlined by Stars in their eyes winner Marc Robinson as Buddy Holly, the show, Buddy Holly – a legend reborn also features Everly Brothers and Roy Orbison tributes in an evening of rock and roll nostalgia.

According to Adrian, this is a show everyone can enjoy.

He added: "It will be all music — just the way I like it. The audience is spread widely through the age groups.

"I have 20-year-olds coming up to me after the show to talk about Buddy. That really hits home how relevant his music still is.

"His songs were the blueprint for modern pop music – they are accessible and catchy on one level but there is also a great depth to his lyrics".

On the night (also his 39th birthday) Adrian will be fully in character wearing heavy rimmed glasses, masquerading as one of the Crickets – Buddy Holly's supporting band.

He also will feature on lead guitar in the Everly Brothers/Roy Orbison opening act.

Adrian remarked: "I love getting into character and letting the music carry me away to a different time. It's all music I really love and I really embrace it".
