Best taste of the wild west in the southside

The Shawlands takeaway opened its doors in 2012 and customers were soon queuing round the block for a taste of their simple yet tasty menu.

The next step was obvious; a retro Americana-style diner just opened along the road in Strathbungo, where customers travelling from near or far could rest their weary, burger-seeking selves as they tucked into an extended menu of American favourites.

The other half and I went along at the tail-end of the festive season (when it was still acceptable to gobble your body weight in grub) and marvelled at the stylish interior — a far cry from the tiny takeaway down the road.

Even at 4pm there was a half an hour wait for a table, but thankfully, we persevered.

I opted for the Duke — an option from the takeaway’s secret menu, once upon a time.

It’s a double-stacked version of the classic Western burger (cheese, smoked bacon, onion ring and barbecue sauce) with pulled pork — and it gets my vote for one of the best burgers in Glasgow.

A flavour-packed smashed patty, smokey complements galore — burger lovers everywhere need to wrap their jaws around a Duke, and soon.

The OH opted for the Bubba; a double cheeseburger with pulled pork, Carolina mustard sauce and coleslaw and demolished it in mere minutes — a glowing recommendation, then.

We shared sides of chilli cheese fries and barbecue beans — both excellent — and, after polishing that lot off, there was no room for anything else.

Southsiders in the know have been flocking to Buddy’s since it opened, not to mention customers coming from further afield (behold; westenders leaving their corner of the city for a taste of Shawlands!)

For those of you yet to try it, this southside eatery remains the place to be, and serves up the best American grub this side of the Clyde (if not the other side too).
