Budding musicians aim for the stage at Jayz

Budding young musicians are invited to learn how to play guitar in free southside lessons from the frontman of a well-kent Glasgow band.

Shawlands bar Jayz continues to build its reputation as a local music venue with a 12 week block of free lessons, courtesy of Keiran Sinclair of bluegrass band Papa Shandy and the Drams.

Kids aged under 18 kicked off what could be the start of some promising music careers on Tuesday, beginning with Darius Rucker’s guitar-led tune Wagon Wheel.

The youngsters will drop in to Jayz every Tuesday for 45 minute slots — and at the end of the course, they’ll have the chance to perform with Kieran at Jayz under 18 acoustic sessions.

Bar owner Gary Broadhurst said: “We’re over the moon Kieran will be hosting his first ever guitar lessons here. I’m in no doubt, through his teaching and demonstrations, that the students will learn how to play the guitar professionally and successfully.

“I also expect they’ll be blown away by the wealth of knowledge and understanding Keiran has in both the music world and — of course — his instrument of choice.”

The Papa Shandy frontman commented: “In terms of people, we’re looking to attract young performers — those thinking about learning to play the guitar just for fun, or who are seriously considering it as a profession, we welcome everyone.

“Sadly, not everyone can afford to pay for lessons, so I’m more than happy to do it for free.”
