Acoustic duo Tales of Jake will play on the same stage as John Guliak in the intimate setting of the Glad Cafe in aid of Cosgrove Care.

Both are regulars and indeed, favourites, at many venues across Shawlands and beyond.

John Guliak is a Canadian singer-songwriter, now based in the southside after a five-year stint in Vancouver, Canada.

His work is critically acclaimed and features performances by some of western Canada’s most talented musicians.

John’s live shows have been praised for their honesty and integrity and there are very few Canadian roots acts he hasn’t shared the stage with.

His debut album, The Black Monk, 7 Stories and 13 Songs reflects the poetic and political observations John has made while living in various locales across north America..

Meanwhile, Karen Fraser Docherty and Danny Gillan, are an acoustic duo who named themselves after a dog.

With a combination of original songs and carefully selected covers, Tales of Jake have become a regular fixture on the southside, winning The Urban Pub Company’s 2012 Best Acoustic Covers Act.

Vocalist and hamornica player Karen and Danny (on guitar) got together in 2011.

She said: “It was then I was finally ready to sing in public, something others had been telling me for years.

“I bullied Danny into providing musical backing.”

With a combination of original songs and carefully selected covers, Tales of Jake have become a regular fixture at La Roche Rhumba, Southside Sessions and many other of the many up-and-coming venues throughout the southside.

They are also the house band for the Greater Shawlands Republic, comedian Bruce Morton’s political movement/comedy cabaret which meets on the first Sunday of every month in Bungo on Nithsdale Road.

As for the benefactor, Cosgrove Care is a Giffnock-based charity (with support shops in Shawlands) which specialises in providing personalised support and care services for children and adults who have learning disabilities, autistic spectrum disorders and mental health issues.

Both acts are playing for free in aid of the local cause — with all profits going to Cosgrove.
