College rock course strikes right chord with Cumbernauld students

STUDENTS from Cumbernauld have been singing the praises of their college after it won an award.

Motherwell College’s Music/Rock and Pop HNC and HND won the title of Scotland’s Music Course of the Year at the inagural Scottish New Music Awards in Glasgow, seeing off competition from RSAMD and the University of the West of Scotland.

And three students on the HNC programme, who hail from Cumbernauld, have been keen to say why they feel their course is a winner.

Ryan McCrone from Achray Road, said: “Since coming on to the Music/Rock and Pop course, I’ve been made aware of the music scene that’s out there and how best to promote yourself.

“The partnership between the college and the Foundry Music Lab (FML) is ideal. The professional recording and rehearsal studio lets us perform and receive feedback from industry experts in the know.”

Lewis Ritchie, also from Achray Road, added: “The course is fun and informative. To be surrounded by music lovers and those who have been at the hub of the music scene is a real benefit.”

And Scott Kerr, of Lawers Drive, added: “There’s a great atmosphere at the College and its music scene is definitely on the up.”

Department head David McShane said: “To achieve such affirmation and be deemed as one of the best places to study music in Scotland is a great honour.

“I am thrilled the hard work of the department has been recognised, as we strive to offer our students the best facilities and music programmes at Motherwell College.

“We have been enthused by the positive reaction we’ve had from students and industry experts since the introduction of the course last year.”
