Eating Out: a taste of Spanish sunshine

SPANISH food and sunshine — what more could a Glasgow girl ask for on a Monday evening after work?

Yes, the recent good weather beckoned me towards Battlefield for a slice of Spain courtesy of Tinto Tapas Bar.

The beauty of tapas for an eats-anything reviewer such as myself is variety — so although I opted for two fish dishes, I got to sample the other half’s meatier options too.

I went for two specials: sea bass, and king prawns, chorizo and spinach, as well as some aubergine fritters served with Spanish honey.

Both seafood options were stunning: proof positive that you don’t need to complicate things when there’s standout produce on offer. The prawns were plump, succulent and perfectly matched to the salty sausage and creamy spinach, while the fish was crisp on one side, soft and flaky on the other, with just enough buttery lemon to provide a zing.

The aubergine fritters were a good addition; a wonderful combination of sweet and savoury, and accompanied by a huge pot of honey so I could choose how much to drizzle (clue: lots).

The OH went for morcilla — Spanish black pudding — with apple and onion chutney and sang its praises for the mere minutes that it remained on the table. He also opted for chorizo in a tomato sauce and breadcrumbed cheese accompanied by a gorgeous spicy dip.

Despite all that, and the generous helping of bread and olives, we marched on to dessert; his, an orange cheesecake and mine, churros and chocolate dip.

The homemade cheesecake tasted exactly that, providing a zesty punch — a summery delight.

The churros — dippable Spanish doughnuts — were fresh and there was gooey chocolate aplenty, but could perhaps have done with less of a sugar coating.

The heatwave may be on its way out — but as they say, I’ll always have Tinto Tapas.
