Eating Out: honest to goodness foodie feast

EVER thought about foraging your own wild garlic from the local park? Locavore has — and I’m glad of it.

The not-for-profit shop is now in Strathbungo — and the team are on a mission to get southsiders eating more local food.

Their Honest Box Canteen nights are a chance to showcase produce on the Glasgow doorstep — and those counting the pennies will be glad to know that it’s a free event, although Locavore accept donations for what you think their meal is worth.

The other half and I headed along on Sunday with empty bellies (it’s BYOB, but on a school night we thought it better to stick to the apple juice).

This is an exercise in sharing, so have your best conversation starters at the ready. Thankfully we sat next to a friendly pair of fellow diners — more importantly, they didn’t hog the potato wedges.

But more on that — first up; starters. I opted for oatcakes with local cheeses (a generous helping too), mackarel and mushroom pates (the latter was particularly good) and organic chutney, while the OH raved about an organic squash, apple and sage soup.

The mains — with shared sides of potato salad, hummus, wedges and coleslaw — consisted of a lamb and mint burger (snapped up by my companion) or a beetroot pizza — and although I had my doubts about the pizza, I’ll put myself down now as a convert. The fresh, doughy base, topped with sweet beetroot sauce and tangy cheese was great with my choice of toppings; Loch Byre sausage and some of that local-as-can-be wild garlic.

We finished with a lovely apple and rhubarb cake, as well as entertainment courtesy of musician Paul Clark (locally sourced, naturally).

The Honest Box event is a chance to show what can be done with local produce — but perhaps more important than the contents of the meal is the chance to break bread with likeminded food fans, and find out what’s going on in this neck of the (rather tasty) woods.
