Festival is a feast for the eyes

THINKING of the Barras — of my childhood at least — conjures up scents of sugary doughnuts and vinegary chips more than world cuisine.

But, much like the rest of the city, the east end of Glasgow has fallen for the charms of a recent foodie revolution, hosting one of the most talked-about events of the summer last month.

OffKILTR’S Glasgow Street Feastival opened over two sunny days in July, drawing food fans from far and wide to the Barras Art and Design Centre for “a celebration of food, music and culture”.

By the 4pm start, there was already a queue. By 6pm, some feastival stalls had run out of their bestsellers — but there was plenty of grub left and craft beer and wine flowing.

If you weren’t there to catch it the first time then fear not, because the feast is back on this Saturday and Sunday.

The first event featured seafood from The Finnieston, Vietnamese delights from the Hanoi Bike Shop, Scottish cuisine courtesy of Stravaigin, and Korean-style kimchi burgers. Street food veterans Babu Bombay Street Kitchen were also there, as well as Caribbean cooks Babylon Roots Kitchen.

The second bite of the cherry is set to offer the same variety, along with music from DJs and pop-up fashion stalls.

This free, long and lazy weekend is just what increasingly food-obsessed Glaswegians have been crying out for — and well worth making a trip east.

Doors open at the Art and Design Centre 4-11pm — for more info, visit KILTR.com/streetfeastival.
