Festive folk gathering

Scottish folk stalwart Phil Cunningham’s name seems almost synonymous with the festive season, thanks to his regular slot on the BBC’s Hogmanay Live show.

But head to Candleriggs this week and you’ll see the man in person — with a host of special guests — for the now annual Phil Cunningham’s Christmas Songbook show.

The show has proved popular for the last eight years, and will this year take in Aberdeen, Perth, Edinburgh and, of course, Glasgow on a whirlwind, pre-Christmas 
tour.

Audiences looking to capture some of that festive spirit can expect jovial anecdotes, modern and traditional Christmas music, courtesy of some of the biggest names on the folk scene.

The instrumentalist — known for his turns in Silly Wizard and Relativity, as well as being the musical partner of the Shetland fiddler Aly Bain — is hoping for a sing-along from the audience too, so prepare those vocal chords accordingly.

Phil’s guests for the evening may encourage some festive cheer, as he’s joined by the hugely successful Eddi Reader, Karen Matheson (of Capercaillie fame), Orcadian singer/guitarist Kris Drever, John McCusker, Ian Carr and Kevin McGuire — as well as a special guest brass 
band.

If Christmas is a time to come together for songs and good cheer, then this City Halls gig might just be the place to welcome in the holiday.

Phil Cunningham’s Christmas Songbook starts at 7.30pm tonight (Thursday, December 18) in the Grand Hall at Candleriggs.
