Hairspray

MAKE ready to shake rattle and roll as Hairspray starring Michael Ball boogies on down to Glasgow next week.

The smash-hit musical currently touring British cities stops off in Glasgow for a 13-day run with a show that promises "fun, fun, fun".

Set in Baltimore in 1962, Hairspray tells the story of plump teenager Tracey Turnbald whose dream is to dance on the Corny Collins Show — a fictional chat show akin to what Paul O'Grady does now.

Remarkably she becomes an overnight sensation and is transformed from lowly social outsider to irrepressible teen celebrity.

But can a trendsetting hair-hopper like Tracy spirit her shy mother out of the apartment, beat evil rival Amber to be crowned Miss Hairspray and win the heart of local heart throb Link Larkin — all without messing her hair do?

Answers will be revealed in this all-star London production set to the doo-wop music of 1960s America.

Bishopton-born Emma Dukes plays a leading role as Penny Pingleton —Tracy's slightly dorky, pesky but devoted best friend in the show.

Emma (20) told Live: "She is such a great character to play. The show is just brilliantly written and audiences become enthralled with the characters.

"I don't want to give too much away but my character has an interesting journey in the show".

It was while attending Bishopton primary and appearing in school plays that Emma was bitten by the acting bug. She then trained at Glasgow Academy of Musical Theatre Arts.

More recently Emma's appeared in the stage production of Disney's High School Musical 2 and Les Misrables.

But the charismatic performer says Hairspray remains her favourite because "it's such a fun show".

She added: "The music is fabulous and the costumes are really colourful.

"I know most people say this, but by the end of each night audiences are on their feet dancing to the last number".

Emma spent her formative years in Renfrewshire and although she has been away for three years, says she can't wait to have friends and family come and see Hairspray.

An excitable Emma, said: "When I come back at Christmas people go Oh, you do musicals, that's nice. But now they will have a chance to see me live. I can't wait to see their faces".
