Howlin’ in the Mearns

The venue has recently been refurbished in a bid to become a focal point for live music in the town and for Howlin’ Radio’s front man, the gig is very much a homecoming.

Crawford Smith, who grew up in Newton Mearns, said: “It’s great to be back at the Mall, this place used to be the only bar in town and it’s where I saw some of my first live bands”.

The band pride themselves on playing uplifting and original versions of classic 60s and 70s songs. Among their repertoire includes hits from Creedence Clearwater Revival, Eric Clapton, Jimi Hendrix, Elvis Presley, Wilson Pickett, The Band, The Kinks, Davie Bowie and many more. 
The band is made up from a collection of talented southside musicians who met each other at regular open mic events hosted by the Southside Sessions in Shawlands. 
They started performing together in February 2012 and have already played some noteable gigs throughout the year, including headlining the Southside Festival’s acoustic stage in May and the opening event for the new Queens Park Arena in October.
Crawford added: “Working as a collective helps to keep the performances fresh and exciting for the band members and audience, we rotate band members on a regular basis, depending on what each event requires”. 
If you can’t make it to The Mall tomorrow, there are still plenty of chances to see Howlin’ Radio in the coming months.

Next Friday they play at Sweeney’s on the Park in Shawlands, then on Friday, February 1 they will perform at Pollokshaws’ 1901 bar.
