Just saying Hello again to Ms Dolly

IN ITS film version it was an instant hit back in 1969 and helped launch the career of a young star named Michael Crawford, who went on to become the accident-prone Frank Spencer in Some Mothers Do ‘Ave Them and also, later, a big musical talent in his own right.

Hello Dolly also boasted a theme song which burrowed its way into your brain and resided there ever after.

The plot involves the life of Dolly Gallagher Levi: a widow who seems to have all the answers to the problems of the world.

Dolly’s planning to find a wedding match for brusque merchant, Horace Vandergelder — but unbeknownst to the hapless store owner, Dolly’s designs are really getting him to walk up the aisle with her.

He, meanwhile, is under the impression that the widow is fixing him up with a lady called Irene Molloy.

In amongst all this, a young artist, Ambrose Kemper, has fallen in love with Horace’s niece, Ermengarde. But the successful businessman pours scorn on any union between the two as he doesn’t think an artist is a suitable job to look after his ward.

Ambrose enlists Dolly’s assistance and her quick wits saves the day.
