Leadhills Gala Day 2014 Slidehsow

ORGANISERS have never seen so many people at Leadhills Gala Day. The star attraction this year was the Imps junior motorbike team which usually performs for massive audiences such as those at the Edinburgh Tattoo.

But Gala secretary Charlotte Paul managed to persuade them to stop off in tiny Leadhills and perform there.

And the youngsters put on two shows, riding their bikes through fire in the second one.

“They were absolutely fantastic. The children were great,” said Sarah Alcock who chairs the gala committee.

She added that the motorbike stars were “quite shocked” when they arrived in Leadhills, on their way south from performing in Inverness, to see how small and remote it was!

The committee had been fundraising all year and had enough to cover the spectacular show.

“We had the largest number of people ever seen at the gala,” added Sarah. “It was jam-packed full.”

Youngsters got a bargain - tickets for the day were just £2.

The weather was brilliant too, with sunshine for the fancy dress and for the crowning of gala queen Beth Alderman by Dr Gordon MacEwen, who had retired after many years as the local doctor.

Freelance photographer James Clare was on hand to capture the action for the Gazette and his pictures are featured in our slideshow, created by editor Julie Currie.
