New pearls of wisdom

A spokeswoman for the venue said: “One of the jewels in Scotland’s musical crown, David Scott and The Pearlies have been releasing classic pop for almost 25 years now.”

Their PR reminds fans how it all began: Scott started writing songs while a teenager in Glasgow in the early ‘80s. After a year of off-and-on sessions, the Pearlfishers’ debut album, Za Za’s Garden, was released in August 1993. Produced by Scott and Brian McAlpine, the album largely abandoned the rustic and folky elements of the Pearlfishers’ early releases in favour of a newfound emphasis on crystalline arrangements and Beach Boys-inspired harmonies.

The Pearlfishers continued to record timeless classics, provoking the Sunday Times to gush: “David Scott is something else again. He’s a songwriter who can actually write songs that are as good as McCartney’s, as amazing as Wilson’s. Not the late-period leftovers — the good stuff.”

Scott’s work as an arranger and producer includes albums and sessions with artistes as diverse as Ricky Ross, Bill Wells and Isobel Campbell, Alex Chilton, Evie Sands, Chip Taylor and seminal indie-pop legends BMX Bandits, of whom he is also a peripatetic songwriting and performing member.

With fellow Bandit Duglas T Stewart he was curator, producer and performer of the highly regarded Brian Wilson tribute Caroline Now.

This year saw the release of the double album, Open Up Your Colouring Book, channeling a somewhat Beach Boys harmony.
