Old Firm stars team up against poverty

The campaigning group Cumbernauld Against Poverty is staging a fundraising Old Firm game on Saturday, July 11, to aid the the town’s food bank.

The effort is just the latest of a wideranging programme of activities designed to boost the amount of provisions donated to the Bethlehem House of Bread food bank.

Organisers there say they depend wholly on public generosity for the supplies needed to meet growing demand.

Cumbernauld Against Porverty has the ultimate objective of making food banks unnecessary.

It costs £10 to enter (with sponsor sheet) – further details from Michael Croly on 07889 800875 – and all proceeds will go to the House of Bread,

A spokesman for the group said: “On the one handwe want to see an end to food banks, which are a consequence of an obscene cuts agenda that targets the most vulnerable in society.

“But on the other hand there’s a real sense of community in Cumbernauld in which people look out for each other, and refuse to see their neighbours going hungry.

“The match on July 11 will hopefully keep the whole issue in the public eye while making another positive contribution to help the House of Bread’s efforts.

“We haven’t got the final line-up for the game sorted yet, but we can guarantee it will be a lot of fun.

“I hope a lot of people wil ll turn up on the day to lend us their support – we need their help to beat the poverty being inflicted on people.”
