Pic of the Week: Bee on Dahlia by Brian McCormick

I found this bee sitting on a Dahlia in my garden last summer, it had been there for a few minutes and so I grabbed my camera and macro lens to capture it.

The particular position of the Dahlia in the garden meant I couldn’t put my tripod up to maximise the depth of field, so I had to hand hold the camera and manually focus on the eyes of the bee.

The camera I used was a Nikon D300, with a Sigma 70mm macro lens, set to f6.3. The ISO was set at 640 and the shutter speed was 1/400 sec.

In hindsight I should have used a slightly slower shutter speed to increase the aperture to have more of the bee in focus, but it’s still one of my favourite shots.
