Pic of the Week: puffin in Flight by Ken Lindsaya

THIS was shot in mid June on the Isle of May.

The puffins are numerous on the island and fairly easy to get close to. With a telephoto lens it is relatively straightforward to photograph birds standing on a rock, but far harder to catch them in flight.

You have to try to anticipate where they are about to land to make it possible.

The added bonus of a mouthful of sand eels helps the composition — they are collected for the young nesting in burrows (46,000 this year) around the island.

The photograph was taken with a Nikon D3 using a telephoto zoom at 400mm; the aperture was f/7.1 with a film speed (ISO) of 500 and an exposure of 1/800 sec.
