As the summer festival season fast approaches, the Alona Hotel in Strathclyde Park is preparing to host an event with a difference.

Tea in the Park on Wednesday has been organised to offer those living with dementia a range of information and advice from a host of agencies.

And it will be headlined by the Musical Memories choir, whose lives are all in some way affected by the condition.

Many members of the choir are currently living with the early stages of the condition, while others are close family and friends who have adopted a full-time caring role.

James McStay, Alzheimer Scotland’s Dementia Advisor for South Lanarkshire, provides members with support and participates in the choir, which meets in Hamilton.

He explained: “Singing has been shown to have a highly beneficial impact for people with dementia, both in terms of mental stimulation and social support.

“Learning a few verses is an achievable challenge because participants have the support of the group.

“Crucially, the choir is just one of many supports available across Lanarkshire and the Tea in the Park event is about showcasing what else is out there.”

Co organiser, Lorna Hart, Dementia Advisor for North Lanarkshire, added: “People living with dementia and their carers shouldn’t feel alone.

“This event is about providing reassurance, raising awareness and showcasing the range of supports and services available.”

As well as performances from the choir, many partner organisations will be represented on the day to provide information, support and advice.
