Restaurant Review: banking on an old favourite

Despite a rival of similar style arriving in the west end on a weekly basis, The Left Bank continues to stand strong.

The Gibson Street restaurant serves home cooking with dishes inspired from around the world, and prides itself on using locally sourced produce .

The atmosphere is more relaxed than many of its competitors, and it is a very enjoyable place to spend an evening, whether with a meal, or just a few drinks.

It’s very intimate, with comfy couches, and feels busy without being
overcrowded.

The dinner, unfortunately, didn’t get off to the best start possible.

My hoi an chan chicken skewer was warm at best, with very little meat and very little taste — while the salad with which it was served was far from fresh.

The garlic bread with gruyère cheese did not come with any gruyère as advertised, and it was also served cold.

Things turned around, however, with my main; a black salmon fillet marinated in mirin and sake.

It was up to the standard you would expect in any of the city’s best Japanese restaurants, such as Sauchiehall Street’s Nanakusa.

The crispy noodles with which it was served were unique and enjoyable, if somewhat difficult to eat with a knife and fork.

By dessert, starter-gate was well and truly forgotten thanks to a delicious sticky toffee pudding, with a candied ginger, nutmeg and toffee sauce.

All in all, it was a great experience — and it is far less stuffy (and far more enjoyable) place to be than certain other establishments.

The meal as a whole proved the starter may well have been a blip, rather than a damning indictment of the restaurant as a whole.

For price, it also stacks up favourably against its competitors.
