Restaurant review: raising a glass for southside brewery

After a pre-Christmas visit, I can confirm that the beer is well worth a try.

The Clockwork lager is crisp, refreshing and extremely well priced considering it’s a small scale, on-premise operation, and the Red Alt is an ale lover’s dream; deep red in colour and deeper and darker in flavour.

But, let’s face it, your humble reviewer is all about the food, and Clockwork Beer Co has a menu packed with pub grub...but does it live up to the same standards as the pints?

It may have been the Christmas rush, but there was a bit of disappointment in store, as a lot of dishes were out of action that night.

From what was left, the other half plumped for nachos to start, and was presented with a heaving bowl topped with gooey cheese, sour cream and salsa — a meal in itself.

I went for jalapenos, stuffed with cream cheese and served with salad and sweet chilli dip — a lighter option, and sweet, spicy and satisfying.

On then to a classic; fish and chips. The batter was crisp, the chips plentiful and the tartare sauce tangy. It was pub food — but that’s no complaint when accompanied by a glass of Clockwork’s finest.

The OH ordered a burger with haggis and cheddar which, again, came with ample chips and coleslaw — however, the burger was a bit lost under the flavour of the toppings and an oversized floury bap.

I attempted a chocolate fudge cake for dessert. It was a mountain of a slice; rich, sticky and oh-so-indulgent, and despite trying hard, I failed to make it all the way to the top.

A belgian waffle was, again, a gooey — and sizeable — treat.

Above all, the service at Clockwork was wonderful; friendly and just the right amount of festive.

If you’re one of the few southsiders who hasn’t been, I suggest a post-Christmas drink there soon.
