Restaurant Review: serious portions for the festive shopper

Silverburn is a winter wonderland at the moment, all twinkling lights and sparkling trees.

Of course, you’ll all know that — chances are you’re deep in Christmas shop mode by now.

And, as such, you’ll know that after pounding the pavements in search of the perfect presents, there’s call for a much-needed recharge.

The other half and I battled through the festive shoppers to visit the new TGI Friday’s there.

Winter weather and a packed festive calendar means it’s entirely acceptable to indulge in a bit of stodge — or so I told myself, as we ordered a share plate of nachos to start.

Points for presentation; TGIs make sure every chip is topped with molten cheese, arranged around a mound of salad, guacamole and sour cream.

You can’t really go wrong with that combination, and we scoffed the lot — but to me, the charm of a good nacho plate is everything seeping together, creating an unctious mess worthy of sticking your face in. Dare I say it; this was just too neat.

Happily, my main was a case of be careful what you wish for. The ultimate Jack Daniels double glazed ribs were sweet, smoky, fall-apart tender and the cause of some sticky fingers.

Served with crispy fries, onion rings and coleslaw, this was a pig-out feast even at half rack size — although the full rack option is there, should you be in Christmas shopping meltdown.

The OH opted for a burger with pulled pork; a decent 7oz patty with tasty toppings including pickled red onions.

We shared a brownie obsession plate to finish; a death by chocolate dish, all hot fudge, cold ice cream and sugary drizzles.

The food at the Silverburn branch is naughty, nice and just the ticket after a hard day’s shop. Sadly, service let our visit the down — as friendly as our servers were, the meal took over two hours from start to finish.

Still, another few days surrounded by wrapping paper and cellotape and those ribs may call me back to Silverburn for some much-needed festive respite.
