Stars, stunts and old school glamour at Glasgow Film Festival

The 12th annual event runs February 17-28, opening with the UK premiere of Hail, Caesar! by Ethan and Joel Coen.

Some 308 events and 174 films will take place before the closing film, the Oscar-nominated Anomalisa — not to mention stars including Richard Gere and Natalie Dormer descending on Glasgow.

Gere will be in town to support the UK premiere of Time Out of Mind on February 28, while Game of Thrones star Dormer walks the red carpet for the UK premiere of The Forest on February 25.

Director Ben Wheatley will attend the Scottish premiere of his JG Ballard adaptation High-Rise, starring Tom Hiddleston and Sienna Miller, and arthouse director Peter Greenaway and stuntman Vic Armstrong will also put in appearances.

The usual site-specific and special events are also in place, including an all-action screening of Raiders of the Lost Ark (perhaps with boulder?) and Silence of the Lambs at Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Romeo + Juliet at Trades Hall, Thelma & Louise at the Grand Ole Opry — not to mention a top-secret location, complete with prison bus transport and orange jumpsuit, to watch Con Air.

As well as an Old Hollywood strand, GFF16 also pays tribute to David Bowie .

Concert film Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars screens late night on February 20, and The Man Who Fell To Earth gets an airing at the Glasgow Science Centre Planetarium — just a couple of the fitting tributes included.

“And we’ve been around for a few years now, so look out for some extra-special movie anniversaries in the programme.”
