The stage is set for another Shindig

Following last year’s successful showcase event, the Southside Shindig is back on June 6 — with loads more on the local entertainment front.

The fun kicks off at noon and runs until 5pm, taking in food, music, dance, art and play for revellers young and old.

Event manager Marie Davidson told The Extra: “Entertainment will be on throughout, including Theatre at Queens, Dohlbeats, Glasgow Hong Lok Dragon n Dance Troupe, The Macintosh Choir, Abhinaya Dance Academy, Spinning Wheel and Howlin’ Radio.

“There will be food demos where people can learn to make (and taste!) fabulous foods from around the world — Scottish, Spanish, Irish, Indian, North African, Pakistani and Polish.

“There’s something for everyone, so come along for a taste of something new and join in the Shindig atmosphere.”

Nik’s Creative Station will provide the stories while the Southside Music School hosts drop in workshops — and Glasgow Life are on hand for sporting types. Govanhill Baths-based Rags to Riches will be teaching people how to upcycle, and SW Community Cycles will run a bike surgery. The Forestry Commission Scotland will also be on hand, holding woodland walks and talks, craft workshops and even a spot of outdoor yoga.

Marie continued: “Last year’s Shindig saw the creation of Glaschu Ekikaran, (or Glasgow As One). The group is made up of local Asian and Celtic musicians who performed a specially commissioned piece to celebrate the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“GAO continue the commonwealth-themed collaboration for this year’s Shindig, taking culturally diverse samples and placing them over a backbone of traditional Celtic songs.

“The musicians are from Scottish, Indian and Irish backgrounds, and it’s an opportunity to fuse some of these global influences found here in diverse Scotland.”

The Southside Shindig, funded by The Big Lottery Awards, is free and takes place at the park’s 19th century bandstand, finally restored last year after it was destroyed by a fire in 1996.
