Written and directed by Juile A. Calderwood, ‘Once in a Generation…’ takes a look back at the main talking points of the 2014 Scottish Independence Referendum. Now is definitely the time!

It’s the day of the referendum and Mary is on a high.

Campaigning all day for independence, she returns home confident that a new era is dawning.

Her husband Dave is just back from the rigs and despite being exhausted by both the journey and the ‘relentless ref’, he is home just in time to cast his vote.

With marital and political harmony on the rack, will either union survive?

‘Once in a Generation...’ is a one act play that takes a light-hearted, but often poignant look at the political stances of both sides.

So much has changed in the few years since but there has never been a better time to revisit this pivotal moment in our history.

Hindsight is definitely 20/20, and this show will allow audiences to revel in it.

Speaking of the creation of the show, playwright Julie said: “In our current political climate, I believe that this play will capture the interest of audience members of all persuasions.

“It not only highlights the leading arguments of the time but it works as an exploration of the possible reasons for a swing voter to go one way or another.”

She added: “There are plenty of nods to many of the incredulous events in the lead up to the vote but it also revisits those questions and frustrations that were felt by a large number of the electorate.

“Most importantly, there is a real opportunity for audience members to take pleasure in or to despair over what we know now that our characters didn’t in 2014.

“Brexit has changed everything. I was so impassioned by the independence campaign in 2014, that when the results came through, it was too painful to contemplate revisiting the constitutional question.

“Now we’re leaving the EU and I couldn’t help but go back to that time.

“The interaction between the characters is explosive at times and it’s hard to resist the urge to burst through the fourth wall with all the knowledge we have now.

“I think audiences will really connect with that.”
