Thrills and chills at the Theatre Royal

The show guaranteed to leave audiences shaking in the stalls is on tour, and back in Glasgow, after 26 years of the west end and worldwide tours taking in the likes of South America, Tokyo and Singapore.

For those unfamiliar with Susan Hill’s novel (or the Daniel Radcliffe film that followed — the highest grossing British horror film in two decades), Stephen Mallatratt’s stage adaptation follows a lawyer haunted by a curse after an unforgettable encounter with the spectre of a woman in black — and the young actor helping him to tell his story and exorcise long-held fears once and for all.

The problem is that the further the two delve into his darkest memories, the more those horrors seap back into the real world.

It’s all very well saying ‘it’s only a film’ from the comfort of the couch, but when it comes to a live show, there’s no escaping a creepy encounter with the phantom herself — and that goes for the audience too.

Still, more than seven million people have lived to tell the tale, so a trip to the Theatre Royal this week needn’t be the end of you...just yet.
