Top trends for fashionable fellas

Now rivalling the lady-centric fashion weeks in length, the sixth biannual edition of London Collections: Men AW15 spanned four days back in June (one more than the previous round), which meant more shows and more clothes - and designers didn’t disappoint.

Of course, there were some outlandish creations that even the most ardent fashion-follower would balk at, but on the whole, the autumn menswear trends are mercifully accessible.

Seventies textures rule for outerwear, green is the colour to be seen in and, in terms of prints, tartan is as challenging as it gets.

Men; highlight your fashion might this season, with these key looks...

GREEN CREDENTIALS

Following last season’s military mood, green is sticking around for winter.

From mint (at Hardy Amies) to muddy khaki (Alexander McQueen and Burberry), any shade gets the green-light. Paler hues mesh well with greys, while darker greens work best with brown.

Plus, you get extra points for doubling up - olive and bottle green make an excellent pairing.

SHEAR BLISS

Part of the Seventies trend which started over on the womenswear catwalks, the sheepskin jacket emerged as the essential outerwear piece for AW15, as seen at Burberry, Margaret Howell, Tom Ford and Topman.

Embrace your inner Del Boy with a wide-collared coat (invest in real shearling and it’ll see you through plenty of winters to come), but maybe draw a line at the handful of gold sovereign rings?

TASTY TARTAN

Models at Moschino and Topman formed a right old tartan army, kitted out in colourful kilts and three-piece suits covered in the checked stuff.

If that all sounds a bit too Bay City Roller for your liking, there are subtler ways to try the trend.

Stick to a more subdued colour combo (black, navy and green, for instance), or just one bold tailored piece, rather than top-to-toe tartan.

POLO PITCH

Polo, turtle, roll-neck - call it what you will, this snugly style was all over the winter catwalks.

Switch out your usual button-down and give tailoring a Beatnik edge, with a black polo neck.

Keep it luxe with a fine gauge cashmere or merino knit worn under a wool jacket, or go for something chunkier, in cream or an autumnal hue, if you’re layering over a tee.

ORANGE FEEL

Every season needs a challenging colour thrown in among all the grey, black and more black that is the usual menswear palette, and autumn’s is a real zinger - hazmat orange cropped up on tons of catwalks.

Go the whole hog, Christopher Raeburn style, in a sizeable coat and matching cross-body bag, or let flashes of acidic orange enliven a dark ensemble - socks or a bright beanie will do.
