Jackson’s grocery shop here with its female staff. Note the adverts in the windows for cocoa; Mazuwatee, Rowntrees, Bournville (Cadbury’s), Van Houton’s, and Rova, an early brand name that soon disappeared.
On the shelf marked with Stephenson’s Bread is Marshall’s semolina and bottles of what looks like spirits indicating it was an off-licence. Also on the shelf is a large container advertising tins of condensed milk.
The second shelf has Beattie’s celebrated bread. Biscuits are still available today under that brand name, and this is why in the Taggart tv series an early chief superintendent Beattie was referred to behind his back as ‘The Biscuit’.
