Window to the Past: Cross Street looking west, 1961

The Tollhouse is flanked by a doctor who ‘Tardis’ (a contemporary police box the colour of which later was changed from red to blue) and the bus shelter with Barrhead Road lying beyond.

A tantalising glimpse behind the shelter is caught of a red delivery (bread?) van. What company had ‘...fte...’ in its name at that time?

In the right foreground is the short northern section of Harriet Street, with the old cast iron street lighting electric junction box complete with Glasgow Corporation Electricity Department crest.

The cobblers shop was in the Jubilee building with the shoe repairs sign above in the cutaway corner.

The no through road sign is puzzling, because Harriet Street led into and formed the ‘y’ junction with Shawbridge Street seen in previous photos.
