Window to the Past: When the steamie was a social hub

When the two buildings farthest away in the row between the Wellmeadow (now Sunlight) Laundry and Westwood Road were demolished, the two-storey red sandstone corporation tenement standing today in what is now Thornliebank Road was put up in their place.

The building with the shop and house at number 74, occupied first by Mrs. Pope then Rena Remocker, survived until the main redevelopment began in the 1960s. Today, this site is a grassy plot with advertisement hoardings.

Although illegible here, the black oblong on the gable has the Wellmeadow Laundry’s name.

Note one of the poles installed for the span wires carrying the power supply for the trams. Was the cyclist aware that the young girl was about to dash across the road in front of him?
