World food and music at the Southside souk

The Southside Souk is joined by the Scottish Refugee Festival to bring a mini “Womad” to the southside.

The souk features a bustling street food market hosting Babu Bombay Street Kitchen; the authentic taste of Africa and the Caribbean from the cooks of the Central and West Integration Network, a charity supporting migrant communities.

The craft market will be open from noon-6pm, showcasing Glasgow’s independent traders including Palm Africa, Bonny Vita and Santosa Yoga.

There will be a chance to taste ethically sourced Dear Green Coffee and craft beers from Grunting Growler.

South African charity, The Bookery, will be hosting paper craft workshops for any age. Henna painting and massage are also on offer.

On stage, there’s an equally diverse line-up of acts including world music from DJ Kwaby kicking off proceedings at noon followed by Bengali dancing from the Tarang Dance Academy at 2.30pm and throughout the day entertainment will include Afrobeats from DJ Charlie McCann; the soulful sounds of Congolese singer-songwriter Jethro Kinavuidi; the wild strings of Roma band E Karika Djal; and the rousing voices of the Maryhill Integration Network’s Joyous Choir.

In the evening, the headline act is critically acclaimed Mbalax, Afrobeats and Ska fusion band Samba Sene and Diwan from Senegal at 8pm followed by DJ David Barbarossa from 9-10pm.
