Young stars will be going for gold in new games project

Young stars throughout East Dunbartonshire are being offered a golden chance to get more active thanks to a unique project which ties in with the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

A physical activity programme - ‘Going for Gold’ - is being rolled out to local nurseries and family centres, as part of efforts to ensure an ongoing legacy from the Glasgow Games.

The initiative has been designed and implemented by East Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership Health Improvement Team and the Leisure and Culture Trust, with support from East Dunbartonshire Council.

In keeping with the theme, the physical activity programme will be based on Commonwealth Games sports and has three levels - bronze, silver and gold - for children to aim to achieve.

Councillor Alan Moir, the council’s convener of development and regeneration, said: “I’m delighted that the Going for Gold programme will be delivered over June, July and August.

“This kind of initiative will ensure a genuine, ongoing Legacy from the 2014 Commonwealth Games - helping young people to become more active, providing staff with more training and getting families involved into the bargain.

“I look forward to hearing about the success of this scheme as we move into a super summer of sport.”
