Any ideas for a tour of the Royal Burgh of Lanark?

PLANS are afoot to not only allow visitors to Lanark to see its historic sites but also learn about their background while touring the Royal Burgh.

A new ‘history trail’ of the town – a guidebook produced with the help of community Council member Eleanor Mclean – has recently been published.

However, the Lanark Business Group, always keen to boost the town’s tourist trade, is now looking to ‘in-situ’ information boards at special points of interest to tell visitors the story behind these local landmarks.

Group chairman Alistair Brooks has been touring the town personally, gathering ideas on locations that might be worth adding to their very localised ‘history tour’ of the Royal Burgh.

It is hoped that these attractions will not just include the more obvious locations, such as the Wallce Statue at the Cross or the Old St Kentigerns chapel up at the cemetery, but also sites of lesser fame but still of great interest, such as the dog statue on the roof of a shop in the Castlegate.

The quirky, if macabre, story of it being created as a reproachful memorial to a pet poisoned by a nearby neighbour, might not be in the history books but is one of the very ‘local legends’ of the sometimes quirky Lanark story.
