M-way dodgers warned to slow down in park

The area has become a popular short cut since major improvement work started on the M74.

Drivers opt for the two-mile stretch between the Motherwell and Bothwellhaugh entrances rather than endure delays on the motorway.

The park has speed bumps and a 15 miles an hour limit, but one cyclist who says it’s becoming increasingly dangerous claims some drivers are clocking up to 50 miles an hour.

He said: “The park road has become a busy thoroughfare with cars, vans and even motorway express buses using it.

“As a keen cyclist who uses the facilities regularly, I find it is becoming more dangerous daily. I have contacted the police, but as yet have seen no evidence of anything changing.

“Traffic is using the road as a shortcut to miss out the motorway and some vehicles are doing in excess of 40 or 50 mph. Peak periods seem to be the worst.”

Police pledged to send patrols to the park to ensure drivers are observing he speed limit.

Inspector Alistair Anderson said: “The park is for families and others who enjoy the leisure facilities, hence the speed restriction.

“The road is busier due to the motorway works, but that doesn’t mean drivers should treat it as a racetrack.”
