Shock as Aviva to close Bishopbriggs base and relocate

Aviva in Bishopbriggs has confirmed it is closing its local base and relocating.

The news will comes as a huge shock to the 1,200 staff - many who live locally.

A spokesperson from the company confirmed the news to the Herald this morning (Wednesday) but said that the move was “purely to do with property and not to do with job losses.”

However, they have revealed they will relocate to Motherwell in July next year - 13.5 miles away via the M8 according to Google.

A spokesperson from the company released this statement today: “Aviva has confirmed that it will be moving both of its Glasgow operations (Bishopbriggs and St Vincent Street) to a new site at Maxim Business Park, from July 2021. The move enables Aviva to create one, efficient site and continue its presence in Glasgow. Aviva will continue to provide its people with greater flexibility to achieve a work-life balance while still enjoying the benefits of having an office environment available when needed. The decision to move to a new location in Glasgow does not affect employee roles and is based on having one efficient office space.

“Aviva is working closely with its Glasgow employees to ensure a smooth transition to the new office space.”

Getting to Maxim Business Park from the Bishopbriggs site takes an hour and a half by public transport, according to Google.

Bishopbriggs councillor Alan Moir has tweeted: “Shocking “noises” that @AvivaUK has confirmed it is closing it’s #Bishopbriggs base, moving circa 1200 staff, many live locally, 2 Motherwell Jul/Aug’21 Devastating blow 2 @EDCouncil economy & job security. Urgently seeking clarification.”
