Town store at risk

Another high profile Cumbernauld town centre store is under threat of closure, with the collapse of women’s clothes chain Internacionale.

The firm has almost 100 stores across the UK, including 16 in Scotland, following a relaunch of an earlier failed company, Internacionale Retail Limited.

However sales failed to lift off, and bosses were forced to call in administrators after trading for around a year.

Since then it’s understood 20 head office staff in Glasgow have been paid off, while in the individual outlets - including the store at 23 Teviot Walk in Cumbernauld - staff are working and being paid as usual for the time being.

Meanwhile administrator PriceWaterhouseCooper is seeking potential buyers either fror the group or for packages of individual stores.

If it fails to find buyers it’s considered by several analysts that the entire portfolio will be liquidated with the loss of around 1,000 jobs, including nearly 200 in Scotland (where the firm also has a distribution warehouse).

A spokesman for PWC said there had been expressions of interest in particular stores from a number of could-be buyers, but it wasn’t possible to say which outlets.

The threat to Internacionale’s local store and jobs comes just weeks after the closure of Henderson the Jeweller in Cumbernauld.
