Staged as part of the three-day Carluke Jam and Ham Festival, the show was organised by Francis Farrell, head teacher of Carluke’s St Athanasius Primary School.

“The show was a tremendous success,” Francis said.

“It gave the children of Carluke the opportunity to showcase their talent and to show the people of Carluke that young people are very creative.”

Youngsters from Carluke High and St Aidan’s High joined pupils from Forth Primary and several Carluke schools at an event which was kicked off in truly wonderful fashion by St Aidan’s samba band.

“They were fantastic,” Francis said. “They really set the tone for the day and the feedback we had from the audience afterwards was tremendous.”

Next up was a group performance by choirs from all participating schools, whose combined talents produced a spectacular rendition of We Are All In It Together from High School Musical.

Each school then performed two hits, with the common theme being that all the songs performed were hits from a year ending in ‘4’.

Examples include the two St Athanasius PS numbers; I Believe – a hit for The Bachelors in 1964 and for Robson and Jerome in 1994 – and The Impossible Dream from the Man of La Mancha musical of 1964.

Other highlights were provided by Carluke High pupils Jennifer Park and Sean Allan, whose skills on the saxophone and fiddle respectively were a joy to behold.

Teachers from all the schools had a role conducting a choir, on a day which seemed to draw universal praise from everyone who witnessed it.

“The concert was absolutely brilliant,” said Tom Sneddon, chairman of Jam and Ham Festival organisers Carluke Development Trust.

“It was tremendous to see pupils from all the schools singing together.

Parents had been asking me for more tickets but it wasn’t possible to get more spectators in as the Lifestyles hall was the biggest one available.

“The concert was superbly organised by Mr Farrell and our development manager Kathleen Feeney.

“It really lived up to the very high standard which was set last year.”
