Kane said: “I’ve been playing football all my life but I needed to look at the bigger picture and consider life after football so I knew I needed to further my education.

“I have really enjoyed the course although I have found the academic side quite difficult as I wasn’t the best of students at school.”

“The college course has benefited me a lot, I have a much better understanding of things like nutrition now and being trained as a coach will help me continue to develop a career in football.”

On his award Kane added: “I was really surprised to win Player of the Year as I was just delighted to be nominated alongside the other three players.

“I think I have had a really good season. I don’t think I have had to many bad games over the course of the season and I’ve scored goals but I didn’t expect to win the award.”

David Mitchell, sports performance lecturer at New College Lanarkshire, commented: “We are all thrilled for Kane, he has worked incredibly hard this year, both at college and at the club, and he deserves this recognition.

“I have seen a huge change in Kane since he started at the college – he is more confident in himself and we have been able to develop his knowledge in areas like diet and fitness.”

The college is currently taking applications, see www.nclanarkshire.ac.uk
