International Day celebrations for Clarkston school

The event was part of the school’s bid for UNICEF UK’s Rights Respecting School Award.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award recognises achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) at the heart of a school’s planning, policies, practice and ethos.

Children’s rights are central to all aspects of UNICEF’s work, including education, and Carolside Primary use the UNCRC as a framework for their activities.

Pupils and staff from across the school arranged a number of activities including Bollywood dancing, spoken language activities, studying the work of Brazilian artist Romero Britto, Scottish Country Dancing and creating Chinese Dragons.

Parents and carers volunteered to help create an interactive zone which included exhibits of national and regional art and crafts, artefacts, dress, flags, script language and continental cuisine.

A special lunch menu was created by the catering team in collaboration with the pupils and the staff were not left out, as they too were treated to a delicious buffet lunch catered for by the families.

A school spokesperson said: “On behalf of the children and staff at Carolside Primary, we would like to express our thanks and appreciation to the parents, carers, East Renfrewshire Education Department, Caribbean Cultures and the Chinese Community Development Partnership for their tremendous support in making International Day the huge success that it was.”
