Shaken but not stirred as talented students perform at the Scottish Youth theatre

The students, who are all enrolled on City of Glasgow College’s HNC Acting and Performance course, will perform in the college’s production of Bouncers and Shakers, a comedic play which examines nightlife in Glasgow and the people who work and play there. The show will run over three days at the Scottish Youth Theatre.

Each student will tackle a main character as either a bouncer or a waitress at Shakers, as well as a variety of different character roles within the production.

Newton Mearns’ Naomi Devlin,18, is looking forward to the challenge. She explained: “Bouncers and Shakers is a really fun show to be a part of as you get to switch roles at various points throughout the play to show the different types of people you meet whilst on a night out. All the characters I’m playing are so different and so the rehearsal process has been great experience for me. It’s really helped build up my confidence as an actress.”

Fellow student Christopher Ashton, a former pupil of St Ninians High School, added: “Bouncers and Shakers is definitely a comedy and I think anyone who comes to see it will have fun. I’ve never done comedy before so I’m really looking forward to performing in the show and seeing if we can get some laughs.”

The show is being staged as part of the college’s annual Creative City Festival, which runs for three weeks from Monday 27 February. The festival will feature a series of public events and exhibitions which have either been organised by students or will showcase their work. This year, the vast programme also includes live music, a football tournament, literature performances, drama productions and even a murder mystery evening. Events will take place both in the college and at external venues across Glasgow.

Anne Macleod, Acting and Performance lecturer at City of Glasgow College, praised the efforts of Naomi, Christopher and the rest of the cast during rehearsals. She said: “Bouncers and Shakers is a fantastic play and we’d encourage City of Glasgow College students, staff and members of the public to come along and see it. Each of the students have been cast in multiple roles which will be great experience for them to have for when they leave college.”

Bouncers and Shakers will run at the Scottish Youth Theatre from Tuesday 14 until Thursday 16 March.
