Support for school campaign

An impassioned public meeting in Abronhill on September 14 saw the activists launch a public appeal for funding to bring their case to court. North Lanarkshire Council’s decision has already been upheld by the Scottish Government following a ministerial call-in procedure, leaving a court decision the only remaining way to reverse the plans. The schools are to merge at the start of the next academic year.

Campaigner Susan Hamilton commented on recent developments. “We have received tremendous support to fundraising from the local community continuing with further donations received and pledged but not in a position yet to divulge total amounts.”

The group is currently asking supporters to sign up to accept a share of the legal costs. It is hoped that a court order will cap their liability to around £6000. The campaign group says it has already obtained the services of a lawyer.

Susan added that there were various initiatives underway to help increase the funding total.

“There are quite a few events being organised,” she said. “These range from gigs with bands such as Fluorescent Hearts, Vagabond Poets and Falconhoof (all bands have either a pupil in AHS or are ex-pupils of AHS) to smaller fundraising ideas such as tombolas and raffles.

“An online Mydonate account has been set up but we are waiting on the green light to use this. It should be available tomorrow, and if it is I will let you know.

“Our solicitor is presently reviewing additional information provided prior to clarifying next steps of the action. We anticipate providing further information as matters progress.”
