The end for much -loved outdoor centre

North Lanarkshire Council has admitted that the process of demolishing Kilbowie Outdoor Centre is underway - and that no rescue package could stop its closure

The Motherwell Times learned last week that £2 million of Scottish Government funding was being made available to prevent the closure of facilities like this – which the authority owned but controversially got rid of on cost grounds.

We asked the council if it would be prepared to have a change of heart given that cash was on the table.

However, it quickly emerged that the bulldozers were already on the Oban-based site.

A council spokesperson admitted: “Work is currently underway and is expected to be completed by the end of the year, following this the land will then be marketed for sale.

“It’s important to remember that this council is fully committed to continuing to provide our pupils with quality outdoor residential education opportunities.

“Lots of pupils have already been enjoying the brand new exciting five-day outdoor activity adventures at our very own Strathclyde Country Park. During the activity programme, the council’s experienced Active Schools Coordinators, coaches and Park Ranger staff support pupils to participate in a wide range of fun activities in safely and with confidence.

“The activities include bushcraft skills such as den building and fire lighting, bikeability, watersports, orienteering, archery and team building.”
