Young musicians stagea spring spectacular

Cumbernauld and Kilsyth youngsters joined hundreds of other pupils from across North Lanarkshire for a showstopping spring concert in Glasgow.

They were among more than 550 youngsters involved in a magical evening of music and song at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall.

In front of a full house, including parents, friends, teachers and councillors, the preparatory band opened with a medley of songs including One Direction’s “What makes you beautiful”, “I dreamed a dream” from Les Misérables and numbers by Pink and Katy Perry.

A highlight of the evening’s packed programme – which sold out months in advance – was the pipe band, whose rousing renditions proved they are not just first class musicians but also excellent entertainers.

Andrew Sutherland,
executive director of learning and leisure services, said: “Our music provision, which is available to all our pupils, can significantly boost self-esteem, confidence and creativity.

“If a child is interested in music then they’ll get the chance to learn, whatever their passion – jazz, rock, traditional Scottish, choral singing or symphony orchestra.”

For the second year, North Lanarkshire New Dimensions Samba project, featuring pupils from Additional Special Needs schools, opened the concert in the main auditorium.

Jim Park, head of music instruction, said: “From a musical perspective, North Lanarkshire has much to be proud of when you consider the number of events and the quality of performances that have been given by over 1300 of our young people in the past month.”

“The pupils were a credit to themselves, their schools and the council.”
