All set for three peaks challenge

Local man Gareth Holmes (47) and his sons Ross (24) and Rory (19), along with nephew Andrew Hossack (20), are all keen fans of Scotland’s national football side, and wanted to do something to help the Tartan Army Children’s Charity.

So Gareth hit on the idea of taking on the three peaks challenge, and had little difficulty persuading his sons and nephew to join in.

It means climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon, the highest mountains in, respectively Scotland, England and Wales ... in just 24 hours, including travel time.

The lads reckon they are fit and well up the to task – with likely dry weather giving them a little help – but are asking Cumbernauld News and Kilsyth Chronicle’s typically generous readers to give them a boost by digging deep for a worthy cause.

They consider that while there are many excellent charities seeking support a cause backed by the Tartan Army, and aimed at children is certain to have a special appeal for local people.

Gareth said: “The boys are no strangers to a bit of fundraising hard work, as last summer they cycled from Hampden to Wembley to raise money for the Tartan Army Children’s Charity, which is a charity founded and administered by fans of the Scottish national football team.

“Their aim is to support disadvantaged children in Scotland and in the countries visited by the Scottish national team.

“Money is distributed to various projects including children’s hospitals, orphanages and special needs schools both at home and abroad.”
