Coronavirus cases confirmed at Wishaw hospital’s kitchen

Fears were raised this week when it emerged that a Coronoavirus outbreak had been traced to the kitchen at University Hospital Wishaw.

The Motherwell Times was tipped off by a whistleblower who raised concerns about the handling of the issue with staff who work for Serco.

The source got in touch shortly after our press deadline and said: “There have been three confirmed cases and three awaiting results but still the food is going out.

“There’s no lock down or isolation of the kitchen staff that have been in contact with the infected people.

“The management seem more concerned with money than peoples health.

“The way I see it is this - they are potentially spreading this virus from a contaminated kitchen out into the hospital and around their families.

“It’s all due to money.”

The Motherwell Times asked NHS Lanarkshire as to how the emergency in this crucial location had been handled.

John Paterson, NHS Lanarkshire property and support services division director insisted that correct procedure was followed from the outset.

He added:“As per national guidance, any member of Serco’s staff who showed symptoms of Covid-19, or has tested positive, immediately self-isolated at home.

“This applies to staff who are employed directly by NHS Lanarkshire or Serco.

“We have assurance that all appropriate infection prevention and control measures were, and are, in place within the kitchen, including regular and enhanced cleaning and monitoring.”
