Last week we revealed how a man from Motherwell was fighting for his life in a hospital in Vietnam after lasting damage was done to his lungs by the coronavirus.

Stephen Cameron (43), who is a pilot for Vietnam Airlines, has had a change in his fortunes, according to local media in Ho Chi Minh City, which has stated that he may no longer require a lung transplant.

It has also been reported that Mr Cameron, who is single, is showing some signs of consciousness.

Doctors have stressed that he is still seriously ill but that they are looking at steps to wean him off life support and to stabilise their patient longer term.

A spokesperson for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office said: “We are supporting a British man and his family following his hospitalisation in Vietnam.

“Staff from our Consulate in Ho Chi Minh City are in regular contact with the hospital.”
