Margaret Mcinnes (70), who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes, ended up in hospital after contracting the deadly bug.

But thanks to the care of the doctors and nurses at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, she pulled through.

Now her family want to share her good news to give hope to others.

Grandson Andrew (pictured) who lives with Margaret, told the Herald on Friday; “My gran is still unwell, she is on antibiotics but it is so good that she was well enough to come home.

“Myself and my wee sister now have to self-isolate for 14 days.”

Andrew, who is a self-employed joiner, said his gran had been unwell at home for a week with a cough. But when her condition deteriorated, they called an ambulance.

Andrew said: “My gran had been in for a shower and when she came out, she just couldn’t breathe.

“The paramedics came and said she had to go in to hospital, especially as she has these underlying conditions.

“She was in the hospital for five days and that’s her back home now which is obviously fantastic.

“The staff at the Queen Elizabeth really were fantastic too. At first they thought my gran had a chest infection but then the test came back positive for coronavirus.”

He added: “My gran really is very lucky. You hear horror stories about people who don’t even having underlying conditions passing away and it’s horrible.”

Andrew said that his gran has been told to rest and drink plenty of fluids.

She was told it may be another seven days before the virus left her body.

The family have no idea how Margaret contracted the virus.

He added: “We really need to understand that us all staying home is obviously working or my gran wouldn’t have been able to get a bed or
the attention she needed, so keep up the good work to save lives.”
