Politicians unite in fight against virus

East Dunbartonshire’s parliamentarians have united in one voice to inform their constituents on the best ways to fight against Covid-19.

Rona Mackay MSP for Strathkelvin and Bearsden has issued a joint statement from all local SNP politicians – Gil Paterson MSP, Amy Callaghan MP, Stuart McDonald MP and SNP group Leader at East Dunbartonshire Council, Gordan Low.

They are urging constituents to follow Scottish Government advice and take swift action to self-isolate should they begin to experience the symptoms of Covid-19.

Ms Mackay said: “This is the biggest challenge we have faced in our lifetimes. All of us – from the Scottish Parliament, to Westminster to East Dunbartonshire Council – are working tirelessly to ensure our constituents are safe.

“The adjustments we must make to our daily lives are severe, but each of us hold the power to reduce the spread of the virus, protect others and save lives. Only a concerted, joint effort – with partnership across our constituencies - can mitigate the impact of the virus.

“If somebody has symptoms of Covid-19, a persistent cough or a fever, they should isolate themselves for seven days – and anyone else in a household where someone has symptoms, for 14 days. The first port of call for information is NHS Inform website at www.nhsinform.scot.

“We pay tribute to the incredible local organisations and groups working together to support our most vulnerable. For those fit and healthy and want to volunteer, the Scottish Government has launched the ‘Scotland Cares’ campaign. Please visit www.readyforscotland.org.

“We are grateful to the many companies being responsible by supporting homeworking and allowing staff time off for isolation. It is vital all firms align with social distancing measures introduced to protect the nation’s health. We are clear: the onus is on employers to act responsibly and with the health and safety of their workers as their priority. If they cannot guarantee this and the safety of the wider community and are not in essential work to combat Covid-19, they should not be open”.
