People who may have been in contact with a patient who had tuberculosis (TB) are being offered advice and screening. The patient had a stay in Wishaw General Hospital between December and March, and NHS Lanarkshire’s department of public health has contacted 33 patients to offer them screening as a precaution.

All the staff who were in contact with the patient have been given information and advice, and offered screening if needed.

NHS Lanarkshire stresses TB is a relatively uncommon infection in Scotland, and while serious is treatable. It cannot be contracted by sharing dishes or household items.

Symptoms can include high temperature, particularly at night, for more than a fortnight, coughing up blood or dirty spit, and unexplained weight loss.
